What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
A friend was my inspiration for Forever Sheyanne. We met online but quickly transitioned to phone conversations. Sometimes, our conversations lasted for hours, during which he shared aspects of his Native American culture, his spiritual beliefs, and his specific experiences. I, in turn, shared some of my passions, such as Native American spirituality, past experiences, and creative endeavors that resulted in my friend encouraging me to write a novel. At first, the thought of writing a book felt intimidating. It seemed beyond what I'd be interested in or able to accomplish. However, after several months of having shared conversations with him, I began to imagine what good friends we would've been had we met while still in school. From there … the idea for Forever Sheyanne was born and crafted into reality.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My protagonists are based on my imaginings of what our relationship may have been like if my friend, who encouraged me to write a book, and I had met back in high school. While neither protagonist is an exact replica of my friend or me, as school-age kids, there are some character-trait similarities woven throughout the story. The name Sheyanne comes from the name of my first horse, who I bought after graduating from high school and then obtaining a job. (My parents told me if I wanted a horse, I'd have to get a job to pay for it and all of its care. So … I did. Through the years, I've owned, at least, a dozen horses, but Sheyanne (nicknamed Shy) was probably the biggest rascal of them all and smart as they come. Maybe I should write a book about her, one of these days. ๐
