THIS MORNING
Raindrops tap-danced on my windshield as I drove through the countryside this morning. The sky was overcast with dark clouds billowing like giant guardians of the night.
Then from a distance, God dipped his brush and painted the heavens. With a splash of blue and a touch of gold, he chased away the clouds to bring forth the dawning of a new day. I had the front seat to admire the Master at work this morning as my pickup truck traveled the empty country roads.
Like an old friend awakening from sleep, the land opened and stretched as sunlight ascended behind the mountain range. And like a thin blanket from the previous night, the morning mist was slowly lifted over the fields, showing off various crops still glistening with dew. Farmhouses, crooked fences, rusty mailboxes, old red barns, lonely tractors, white churches, a country store, and a gas station or two slowly appeared like parts of a giant palette that God used for his handiwork. A small river appeared on my passenger side as I peeked through the window. He must have washed his brush here as the water was infused with the colors of heaven. A bird or two stood watching on the powerline as a freight train was slumbering on its track and broke the silence of the new day. As the morning progressed, livestock could be seen grazing behind the crooked fences and other vehicles started to come from the opposite direction. At one turn, I saw a few headstones near the road. Just like anywhere else, this land has a past and a story to tell and a future that’s still untold. No matter how many times I drove through here, every morning was different and every one of God’s creation was unique in its design.
Just like the countryside this morning, we’re all created uniquely. We all have scars like the old barns. We are faulty like the rusty mailboxes and imperfect like the crooked fences. But we are God’s best works. Like the river I saw this morning, we are infused with the colors of heaven. We have a past, a story to tell and a future that’s yet to unfold. And a wonderful future it will be no matter what because we are created by the Master.
